How to open an MSG file on Android without Outlook

Outlook messages with attachments

An MSG file is an email saved from Microsoft Outlook. Outlook for Android and Gmail cannot open these files, but the free XanderFiles app can: it shows the whole message, and attachments open right inside it.

What is this file

You get MSG files when someone drags an email out of Outlook into a folder or forwards it “as an attachment”. Colleagues and support teams that use Outlook on a computer send them a lot.

Inside, MSG is Outlook’s binary format (a Microsoft compound file), so you need a special app to read it.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .msg file wherever you have it: in an email attachment, in Telegram, WhatsApp or in Downloads.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The email opens: from, to, date, subject, text and attachments, like in a mail app.
