How to open a CUE file on Android

The table of contents of an album stored as one file

CUE is a text table of contents for an album stored as one big FLAC, APE, WavPack or WAV file: it lists the song titles and where each one starts. The free XanderFiles app reads CUE files and splits the album into separate songs in its audio player.

What is this file

CUE sheets came with whole-disc CD ripping: programs like EAC save a disc as one file and write a .cue table of contents next to it — track numbers, titles, artists and exact boundaries.

A .cue file itself is a short text with no music in it. Without a player that understands CUE, the album plays as one long track and the .cue file opens as cryptic text.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .cue file wherever you have it: in the album folder — next to the big FLAC, APE or WAV file.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The table of contents opens with a “Play album” button. Choose the album folder once — the player finds the big file and starts the first song. Each song appears separately in the playlist, with its own title and length.

Questions

The CUE opened as text — what now?

That is expected: there is a “Play album” button above the text. Tap it and choose the folder with the album.

Song titles in the CUE show garbled characters?

XanderFiles detects the encoding itself, including Windows-1251 and UTF-8, so song titles are readable.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, and it works offline.
