How to play an MPC (Musepack) file on Android

Music in Musepack format — MPC, MP+ and MPP

MPC is Musepack, a music compression format that was valued in the 2000s for sounding better than MP3 at the same size. Old collections and releases still come in MPC, and Android cannot play it. The free XanderFiles app plays Musepack in its own audio player.

What is this file

Musepack grew out of MPEG Layer 2 and was tuned for “transparent” sound at 160–180 kbps: by ear it is hard to tell from the original. That is why music collections were encoded in it in the early 2000s.

The format has two main versions: SV7 (.mpc, .mp+, .mpp files) and the newer SV8. Android’s built-in player knows neither.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .mpc file wherever you have it: in Downloads, on a memory card or in a folder with an old music collection.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The audio player opens and the music starts. You can add a whole folder to the playlist.

Questions

Why can’t my phone open MPC?

Android does not support Musepack. XanderFiles brings its own decoder — after installing it, choose it in the “Open with” dialog.

Should I convert MPC to MP3?

No need: every lossy re-encode makes the sound worse. It is simpler to play MPC as it is.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, and it works offline.
