MKV video with no sound on Android? How to play AC3 and DTS audio

MKV, MP4 and AVI movies with AC3, E-AC3, DTS and TrueHD sound

Movies in MKV often have their sound in AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS. Many Android phones cannot play that sound: the picture is there but there is no audio, or the player says the track is not supported. The free XanderFiles app plays these tracks with its own decoder.

What is this file

MKV (Matroska) is a container: it holds the video, several audio tracks (different languages and dubs) and subtitles. Movie sound is often Dolby Digital (AC3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3), DTS or Dolby TrueHD from Blu-ray.

Dolby and DTS decoders are licensed, and many phone makers leave them out. That is why the video opens without sound. XanderFiles brings its own audio decoders (FFmpeg) and shows the picture with the phone’s own video decoder.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .mkv file wherever you have it: in Downloads, on a memory card, on a USB stick via OTG or in Telegram.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The video player opens and the movie plays with sound. In the “⋮” menu you can choose the audio track and subtitles, the speed and picture-in-picture.
