How to play a WV (WavPack) file on Android

Lossless WavPack music — including CUE albums

WV is WavPack, an open lossless music format. CD and vinyl rips are stored in it, often as a whole album with a .cue file next to it. Android does not play WavPack. The free XanderFiles app plays WV in its own audio player — with a playlist, an equalizer and background playback.

What is this file

WavPack compresses sound losslessly: decoding gives an exact copy of the source. The format is open and free, and supports 24 and 32 bits, high sample rates and multichannel sound.

WavPack also has a hybrid mode: a lossy main .wv file plus a .wvc correction file that restores full accuracy. Android’s built-in player does not know WavPack in any form.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .wv file wherever you have it: in Downloads, on a memory card or in your music folder.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The audio player opens and the music starts. If you add the album folder with its .cue file to the playlist, the big file is split into songs with titles automatically.

Questions

Will it sound exactly like the source?

Yes. Standard WavPack decodes losslessly — the output has the same samples as the original.

How do I split a WV album into songs?

Put the .cue file next to the WV and add the whole folder to the playlist — or open the .cue itself and tap “Play album”.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, and it works offline.
