How to play a TTA file on Android

Lossless True Audio music — and CUE albums

TTA (True Audio) is a simple, fast lossless music format. Disc rips are compressed with it, often as a whole album with a .cue file next to it. Android does not play TTA. The free XanderFiles app plays TTA in its audio player and splits a single-file album into songs.

What is this file

True Audio compresses sound with no loss of quality — decoding gives an exact copy of the disc. The format is open, encodes and decodes very fast and supports audio up to 24 bits.

TTA is found in CD rip collections: an album as one file plus a .cue table of contents with song titles. Android’s built-in player knows neither TTA nor CUE.

How to open it

  1. Install XanderFiles from Google Play. It is free, with no ads and no sign-up.
  2. Tap the .tta file wherever you have it: in Downloads, on a memory card or in your music folder.
  3. When Android asks which app to use, choose XanderFiles. Or the other way round: open XanderFiles, tap “Open file” and pick the file in Downloads or Google Drive.
  4. The audio player opens and the music starts. If you add the album folder with its .cue file to the playlist, the big file is split into songs with titles automatically.

Questions

Will it sound worse than on a computer?

No. TTA is decoded losslessly: the output has the same samples as the disc.

How do I split a TTA album into songs?

Put the .cue file next to the TTA and add the whole folder to the playlist — or open the .cue itself and tap “Play album”.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no sign-up, and it works offline.
